Craven County Will Abstracts

The will abstracts on the pages linked below are abstracted from the original wills on file at the North Carolina Division of Archives and History in Raleigh. They have been microfilmed on reels 1548458 (Columbus County Wills: Baldwin to Williamson and Craven County Wills: Aarons to Bryan), 1548459 (Craven Wills: Bryan to Godett), 1548504 (Craven Wills: Godett to Lee), 1548505 (Craven Wills: Lee to Stanly), and 1548506 (Craven Wills: Stanly to York).

Some of the original wills on the microfilm are extremely difficult to read. Every effort has been made to abstract as much information as possible on those wills. At times, trips to Raleigh were made to view the originals when the microfilm copy could not be read at all. Sometimes, even the original was so faint or damaged that the information could not be abstracted.

Some wills are copied verbatim, due to their extraordinary character, or due to their brevity. For example, the will of Emanuel Antonio (1826) is copied in its entirety because he was to be hanged for killing someone and left a bequest to the child of the man he killed.

Additional wills that have been recorded but that are not filmed with the original wills may be added to the web pages at a later date. This is a work in progress and will likely take quite some time to complete. Keep checking back for updates and corrections.
